A Pilgrimage to the Dark Sanctum

No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell. - C.G. Jung

Upon returning to California*, I took a two-day trip to the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks to digest the contents of The Lucifer Effect and understand the dark side of human nature. The book (which I consider a prequel to The Gulag Archipelago) not only empirically revealed the genocidal nature of humankind, but it also helped me understand what it really takes to be a good person.

We will meet a host of people who have done very bad things to others, often out of a sense of high purpose, the best ideology, and moral imperative. You are alerted to watch for demons along the path, but you may be disappointed by their banality and their similarity to your next-door neighbor. With your permission, as your adventure guide, I will invite you to walk in their shoes and see through their eyes in order to give you an insider's perspective upon evil, up close and personal. - The Lucifer Effect

Since I am still working through the book, I will revert back to my Scandinavian trip next week. Sorry for the short post this week.
