The B&B-style hotel offered an expansive view of the ancient city in southern Hungary, close to the Croatian border. I sat at the balcony and enjoyed wonderful breakfast.

‘Dear God, let there be no hills,’ I prayed before heading out to Siofok.

The route to Siofok was very scenic and relaxing. When I got to the lake town, it was only 11am – too early for a check-in. So I aimlessly wandered around the town and found a traditional Hungarian restaurant where I had… a remarkably unremarkable plate. Despite the so-so introduction, Siofok turned out to be the highlight of my trip.
